Pressley Dorn Best, age 87, of Galivants Ferry, SC, died Thursday, October 19, 2017, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.  He was born December 15, 1929 in Galivants Ferry, SC, a son of the late Jamie M. Best, Sr. and Laura May Wingard Best.  He graduated from Aynor High School where he is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame and chaired the Aynor High School Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee for many years.  He received his B. A. degree from Wofford College and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and played on the basketball team.  He received his Masters degree from the University of South Carolina.  He served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a survival training instructor.  He retired from the South Carolina Public School system after 30 years of service as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal.  He also served the City of Mullins, SC as their Director of Recreation for 17 years.  He grew up in Sandy Plain United Methodist Church where he was very active in the affairs of that church.  When the small church was forced to close, he moved his membership to Aynor United Methodist Church, but continued to maintain the cemetery at Sandy Plain.  He was a member and served on the board of Trustees at Aynor United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of American Legion Post 81 for over 35 years.  Survivors include a sister, Hattie Best Polk of Lake Juanaluska, NC, many loving nieces and nephews, and their children.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Fred G. Best of McClellanville, SC and Jamie M. Best, Jr. of Galivants Ferry, SC, and 3 sisters, Edna Earle Best Lewis of Florence, SC, Miriam Best Altman of Summerville, SC, and Barbara Best Shelley of Greenwood, SC.


Funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday October 22, 2017 at Aynor United Methodist Church.


The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00-2:45 PM at the church.


Burial will follow at Sandy Plain United Methodist Church Cemetery.


Mr. Best requested that no flowers be sent.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sandy Plain United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Allison F. Best, 16951 Pee Dee Road N., Galivants Ferry SC, 29544.
